The day's busiest coding-tool thread, about Codex CLI's background daemon, concerns a GitHub issue filed on 25 Sep, so it is not listed.

  1. xAI

The X Subscription bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium into one plan

Cursor is now sold as part of a Grok plan: paid tiers draw on one usage pool shared across Grok and Cursor, with at least twice the comparable Cursor plan's coding usage when you use Grok models. Third-party models in Cursor need the $30 tier or higher. Existing Cursor subscribers can keep their plans.

  2. Anthropic

Anthropic details its defenses against distillation attacks

This one changes things for API users. New accounts can't edit Claude's prior context on Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5, reasoning stays summarized, and requests blocked by the extraction classifier are now billed. Anthropic claims a 90–99% cut in harvested data and a false-positive rate under 0.1%, and admits it hasn't fully avoided affecting legitimate users.

  3. Intel · OCP Summit

Intel's GPU D270: an inference card with up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X

A bet on memory capacity over HBM bandwidth. Intel says a single 350 W PCIe card handles models of around 300B parameters, and the press reports 1.3 PFLOPS FP8. The large-memory versions come through partners. It's in customer sampling, with no price or general availability yet.

  4. Anthropic · Frontier Red Team

AI models may be able to self-replicate without a datacenter

The red team ran Gemma4-26B-A4B across 15 off-brand $55 Android TV boxes, and GLM-5.2 replicated end to end across emulated devices in 4 of 5 trials, using a deliberately trivial exploit. Their estimate is that small open models are "months away" from doing this on cheap devices. The practical advice is for whoever ships IoT defaults.

Agent37 (YC F26): low-cost sandboxes for running agents

gVisor sandboxes on bare-metal hosts with shared memory, aimed at always-on agents such as Claude Code. The founder says customers average about $0.37 per sandbox per month. The trade-off is no Docker-in-Docker on the default boxes; full VMs cost a little more.

Model releases 2

  1. Meta

Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full

Meta's most capable models, built for long agent tasks. Active Memory carries context across conversations, and Active Focus retries, works around blockers and checks in before consequential actions. Wonder is on the Meta Model API and in Muse Code; Wonder Full is only in Muse Code. Meta claims state of the art on Harvey's LAB, FocusBench and SWE-Marathon; these are vendor claims.

  2. Z.ai

    GLM-Legal: a legal-agent model from Z.ai

Built on GLM-5.3-Flash with legal mid-training and RL. Z.ai reports a 19.2% all-pass rate on Harvey's LAB, 12.5 points above the base model, and parity with closed frontier models on LegalBench. No weights; access is through an application form, and no pricing has been published.

GitHub repos 5

Created on 12 Oct. Star counts are as of 21 Oct, so stars per day are averaged over nine days, not the launch day.

  1. GitHub · new

    deeplethe/solid-glass

A shadcn/ui theme plus agent-UI components (tool steps, diff view, turn status, ask card) for building agent interfaces in React 19 and Tailwind 4. MIT.

  2. GitHub · new

    NB-Corp/gpt-with-taste

One behavioral recipe compiled into system prompts and event hooks for Codex, Claude Code and other harnesses, to cut GPT's defensive disclaimers and get to the work.

  3. GitHub · new

    zhuyansen/new-term-radar

Catches new AI model, product and repo names on X, Hugging Face, GitHub and sitemaps before keyword tools list them. It runs as a CLI, agent skills or an MCP server. The author says hit rates aren't proven yet.

  4. GitHub · new

    composo-ai/DishwasherBench

A physics-simulated dishwasher that models must load under space limits. In a handful of single episodes, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra beat a careful scripted reference by trying items it never did. A small, playable example of a planning eval.

  5. GitHub · phenomenon

    WilderNoTrack/mcd-calorie-butler

One of at least eight repos created on 12 Oct around McDonald's China's official MCP server: ordering, coupons, points and calorie skills. By the repos' own descriptions, several are developer-contest entries. A consumer brand's MCP server drew a wave of agent apps within a day. Listed as a phenomenon, not a recommendation.

AI models can provably hide arbitrary capabilities

Encrypted sub-networks embedded in a model's weights, unlocked only by a secret trigger, resisted fine-tuning, weight noise, trigger search and latent adversarial training in a proof of concept. Capability evals that assume hidden skills can be elicited can be defeated by construction.

SoftwareGym: scaling computer-use agent training with synthesized software

The authors generate and repair 182 runnable GUI apps across 12 categories, train a computer-use agent on trajectories from them, and raise out-of-domain OSWorld pass@3 from 41.4% to 57.0%. Synthetic environments are becoming the training data for agents.

DiffusionART: efficient, stable and scalable RL for diffusion models

On HunyuanVideo-13B, it matches the late-stage reward of DiffusionNFT and Flow-GRPO-Fast with about 12× fewer GPU hours. That puts RL fine-tuning of video models within reach of smaller budgets. Code linked.

Work2Skill: turning recorded human GUI work into reusable agent skills

Screen recordings, input events and accessibility trees from 350 human demos are distilled into skills with workflow rules and completion checks. The skills lift four agent models by 3–8 points on an OSWorld-Verified subset. Code and data released.

S-Space: a spatial workspace inside multimodal models

Interpretability with a practical hook. Multimodal models encode object position and distance along a linear subspace that perception writes to and answers read from, and causal edits there change spatial answers.

Things to try 1

Janas: run MoE models larger than your RAM by streaming experts from SSD. A dependency-free C engine that keeps weights on an NVMe drive, loads only the experts each token needs, and caches the hot ones. On the author's 32 GB Core Ultra laptop, the 48 GB Qwen3-Next-80B-A3B generated 26 tokens/s, against 3 for llama.cpp. These are the author's numbers on one machine, and the README calls it "an experiment, not a product". GPL-3.0; Linux and Windows x86-64.

First step: on Linux, download janas-linux-x86_64.tar.gz from the latest release, unpack it, and run ./janas-chat. Pass --cache <GiB> so the expert cache doesn't push your desktop into swap. (220 pts on HN, 458 ★)

The take

The frontier narrowed today while the floor kept rising. Plan for both.

Meta's best model, Muse Wonder Full, is only available inside Meta's own coding agent, not its API. GLM-Legal sits behind an application form. Anthropic hides more reasoning and bills blocked requests, and xAI now sells Cursor inside a Grok usage pool. Meanwhile Janas runs an 80B MoE on a 32 GB laptop, and Anthropic's own red team ran a 26B open model across a cluster of $55 TV boxes. Expect more labs to keep their top variant inside their own apps. If you build on these models, keep an open-weight fallback you can run yourself.
