At a glance

  • DeepSeek open-sources DeepInfer: the engine behind its production API, for V4.1-Flash on NVIDIA SM100 and Huawei Ascend 950, without the KV cache and disaggregation layers.
  • Mistral ships Voxtral 3: new transcription, realtime and text-to-speech models plus a voice-agent SDK, from $0.0035 a minute.
  • Anthropic turns Claude on attack surface, not bugs: 493 issues across 25 open-source projects, including 4,500 lines of pre-auth code in OpenSSH's defaults.
  • The take: the day's measurable gains came from the machinery around models, not from the models. Compare models inside your own harness.

News 4

Four items. The day's other busy threads were a Google Cloud outage, a reported $80B half-year loss at Anthropic (financials, no product) and a Steam "no AI" filter request.

DeepInfer: DeepSeek open-sources the inference engine behind its production services

Optimized kernels, attention data parallelism, MoE expert parallelism, batch-invariant inference and deterministic sampling, for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash on NVIDIA SM100 GPUs and Huawei Ascend 950 NPUs. It's offline inference only: the KV cache system and prefill/decode disaggregation you'd need for real serving are not included. Apache-2.0. The throughput figures DeepSeek cites are its own.

Using Claude to reduce the attack surface of code

Instead of hunting bugs, Claude looked for code that is reachable but shouldn't be: default-on features, option combinations that silently disable a control, and complex code that runs before authentication. Across 25 projects (5M+ lines) it found 493 issues, including about 4,500 lines of experimental ML-DSA code reachable pre-auth in OpenSSH 10.4's defaults, fixed in 10.5. The method is packaged as a three-pass Claude skill; Anthropic says it is working to bring it into OSS-Scanner.

  3. Anthropic

Claude designed protein binders against scorpion neurotoxins

An internal research model ran a binder-design campaign mostly on its own for about 64 hours: 318k designs, 211 tested in two outside labs, 17 confirmed binders, the best at single-digit nanomolar affinity. That hit rate is ordinary for protein design. What's new is how much of the campaign the model ran itself. Neutralization wasn't tested, and the authors say plainly it isn't an antivenom. All 211 designs and their lab data are on Hugging Face.

Respan (YC W24): an open-source Rust AI gateway built around plugins

One endpoint for many LLM providers, with a tiny core and everything else (providers, chat/realtime/MCP protocols, routing, fallbacks, PII redaction) as compiled-in Rust crates. The team built it after outgrowing a 100k-line wrapper around LiteLLM. It's pre-alpha; MIT or Apache-2.0.

  1. Mistral

Voxtral 3: transcription, realtime and text-to-speech models, plus a voice-agent SDK

Four models: Small Transcribe 3 (highest accuracy, diarization), Mini Transcribe 3 (4B, batch), Mini Transcribe Realtime 3 (under 500 ms latency, for agents) and Mini TTS 3 (35+ languages, voice cloning). A LiveKit-based SDK chains speech-to-text, an LLM and TTS into a voice agent. Mistral claims Small beats Whisper, Scribe v2 and Gemini 3.5 Transcribe on FLEURS; these are vendor numbers. API now; self-deployment by contacting Mistral, and no downloadable weights were announced.

GitHub repos 3

Created on 20 Oct, about a day before compilation, so stars are roughly stars per day. DeepInfer is under News. The rest of the day's new repos were low-signal, account-farming tools or more of the McDonald's China MCP wave, so only three are listed.

  1. GitHub · new

    alexpiar/be-ambitious-harness

A Claude Code skill that sets a baseline goal and a stretch goal per task, runs a cheap gate check first, and grades the result with a verifier that never sees the worker's reasoning. Plain markdown; MIT.

    Self-HPO: self-evolving coding agents via harness-policy optimization

A coding agent alternates between rewriting its own harness and RL-training its weights under that harness. On Qwen3.5-35B-A3B, SWE-Bench Verified goes from 61.0% to 69.5%, with gains carrying over to Multilingual and Pro. Code released.

OpenVLHarness: real-world visual tool use with multimodal memory

A harness that gives vision-language models perception, search and compute tools plus persistent multimodal memory. Across 22 benchmarks and eight backbones it adds 9.7–12.6 points, and with GPT-6 Luna at medium effort it beats max-effort baselines while using at most 37% of their tokens. Code released.

    MemT-1.0: towards memory-native evolution

Memory built into the model's computation rather than bolted on with retrieval, in two MoE sizes (36B-A3B and 288B-A17B). The authors report +12.5 points over the best parametric-memory baseline, and at 128K tokens of history the small model is ~1.9× faster and needs ~66× less storage than a full KV cache. Release details aren't clear from the paper page.

OR-License: LLM agents as real-world operations research practitioners

31 tasks drawn from $3.68M of paid optimization consulting, with a simulated client who knows the business but not the math. Eleven frontier models, mostly run through Claude Code, sometimes beat the expert's objective but never matched its deployable quality; strict feasibility ranged from 45% to 88%. Instances released.

Things to try 1

Kraits: Qwen3.6-35B-A3B on a 16 GB Mac with stock llama.cpp. A plugin that runs Unsloth's ~22 GB 4-bit GGUF on a 16 GB Apple-silicon Mac without changing llama.cpp or the model file. On the author's M4 Mac mini it reports roughly 16–24 tokens/s generation up to 16K tokens of context. These are the author's numbers on one machine, and it handles one request at a time. It only works with llama.cpp build b11715 and that exact model file. Apache-2.0; 5 ★, created 20 Oct.

First step: unpack the llama.cpp b11715 release, clone the repo, and from kraits/bin run ./kraits-server with LLAMA_SERVER pointing at that build's llama-server, -m at Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-UD-Q4_K_M.gguf and -c 16384. Look for "Kraits loaded"; it serves an OpenAI-compatible API on port 8080.

The take

Today's measurable gains came from the machinery around models, not from new models. When you compare models, compare them inside your own harness.

Self-HPO added 8.5 points on SWE-Bench Verified by co-training a 35B model with its own scaffold. OpenVLHarness added about ten points to every backbone it wrapped while cutting tokens. Anthropic's attack-surface work is a three-pass skill, not a new model. DeepInfer shows the same thing from the serving side: DeepSeek published its engine but kept back the KV cache and disaggregation layers, which is where serving at scale gets hard. The one model launch, Voxtral 3, came with an SDK for building voice agents around it. Expect leaderboard gaps between models to keep shrinking next to the gaps between harnesses.
